Fauja Singh - Marathon Centurion

Thanks to SGSC member Syd Clarke for pointing out this story.

Fauja Singh is a (currently) 101-year-old runner, born in the Punjab in India at a time when it was still a British Territory, and who has only recently retired from marathon running. But not from all running, apparently, as he will continue running 5 and 10 km distances, through which he will continue his charity fund-raising.

He wasn't always a runner, in fact he only took it up in his 80's after family circumstances led him to leave India and settle in UK to be with his children. Needing to "get out of the house", and inspired by watching the London Marathon, he began first distance walking and then running. His first marathon was the London Marathon in 2000 and since then he has completed 9 marathons in total - and at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in October 2011 he became the first centenarian marathon runner. As if that wasn't impressive enough, a few days earlier, during an Ontario Masters Athletics meeting, he had set eight M100 age-group world records - at 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 1 mile, 3000m and 5000m!

Singh runs with an East London-based group of like-minded individuals named Sikhs in the City, with whom he carries out his fund-raising runs, and he also carried the Olympic flame during the torch relay leading up to London 2012.

He himself puts his remarkable longevity and continuing athletic ability down to his simple vegetarian diet, and the avoidance of smoking and drinking.
