London Marathon 2012

 

The Virgin London Marathon has been run this weekend, as anyone who has any access at all to any kind of media will be aware.

Of course, the story that overshadowed everything else was the tragic death of Claire Squires during the final mile of the race, and subsequently the overwhelming public response on her fundraising page, where she was raising funds for the The Samaritans. You can find her page here:-

As far as older athletes go, in total there were 5,298 people over the age of 50 who completed the race. Here are some results from some of the age group categories.


In the over-70 age category, there were 169 finishers, of whom the fastest man was Alan Bent finishing in a time of 3hours 42 minutes and 51 seconds.

The fastest woman over the age of 70 was Sue Lambert in a time of 04:05:18

The fastest man in the 65-69 year old age group was Christopher Gill - 03:06:44 and the fastest woman in this age group Angela Copson - 03:22:22.

The fastest man over the age of 50 was Tommy E Hughes in a time of 02:29:55, putting him in 54th place in the race overall. The fastest woman over 50 was Victoria Perry who finished in 02:59:20, for an overall placing of 52 in the women's race.
